[image=r3FobDvp4f] "If people could hear jazz often enough, in person and on records, perhaps more and more of them could begin to accept and understand it." That's the idea Ollie works from; with a three hour record show every night, where he can play just as much jazz as he wishes, and with concerts like the one he recorded, it is inevitable that more people will learn to enjoy music. (from the booklet) About this release: In addition to the Ann Arbor concert contained here in its entirety, this release also includes five bonus tracks recorded at The Tiffany Club in L.A. on August 10, 1954. The aforementioned tunes Line for Lyons and My Old Flame are added here as well as Baker's sole recordings of Hanley's Zing Went the Strings of My Heart, Charlie Parker's My Little Suede Shoes, and the debut recording of his celebrated hit Everything Happens to Me by Dennis & Adair! "I play every set as if it were the final one. It has been like this for years. I don't have too much time left, and it's important to show the musicians I'm playing with -more than anybody else- that I give everything I've got in me. And that I expect them to do the same. [image=4OQfVPAvGd] The seven sides that make up the all-star outing Picture of Heath (1961) might be familiar to fans of co-leads Chet Baker (trumpet) or Art Pepper (alto saxophone), as Playboys (1956). Perhaps owing to trademark-related issues with the men's magazine of the same name, Picture of Heath became the moniker placed on the 1961 Pacific Jazz vinyl re-release, as well as the 1989 compact disc. Regardless of the designation on the label, the contents gather selections recorded on October 31, 1956 -- the third encounter between Baker and Pepper. Backing Baker and Pepper are the sizable quartet of Carl Perkins (piano) [note: not to be confused with the '50s and '60s rockabilly star], Larance Marable (drums), Curtis Counce (bass), and Phil Urso (tenor sax). Although Pepper supplied "Minor Yours" and "Tynan Time," the majority of the material can be traced to Heath Brothers trio member, Jimmy Heath (sax/flute), who was himself an acclaimed instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. The aggregate provide essential interpretations of his work, adding their own unique earmarks on to what is arguably the best and most playful interaction involving Baker and Pepper. Notable occurrences can be heard on "Picture of Heath" where Pepper sonically salutes Thelonious Monk, quoting recognizable passages from "Rhythm-A-Ning" on a number of occasions -- initially during a fierce exchange with Baker on the title track and then again prominently in the commencement of the aforementioned Pepper composition "Tynan Time." One of the more striking elements coalescing the partnership between the combo's soloists is the seemingly innate abilities that Baker and Pepper share as they propel themselves through the limber lines of "For Minors Only." The level of musicianship is evident as Counce, Perkins, and Marable effortlessly banter with youthful verve. Both the studied bop enthusiast and average jazz lover will find much to enjoy and revisit on Picture of Heath. (AllMusic, Lindsay Planer) Track list: 1. Picture of Heath 2. For Miles and Miles 3. C.T.A. 4. For Minors Only 5. Minor Yours 6. Resonant Emotions 7. Tynan Time Personnel: Art Pepper (Performer, Sax (Alto)) Carl Perkins (Piano) Chet Baker (Main Performer, Trumpet) Curtis Counce (Bass) Larance Marable (Drums) Phil Urso (Sax (Tenor)) Enjoy and share! I dedicate this to the beautiful people who still seed my torrents in the age of hit and run.

[image=4zmIPZwGv1] Eliane Elias - 2013 - I Thought About You (A Tribute To Chet Baker) 24 bit, 96 kHz HDTracks download Pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias pays tribute to legendary jazz trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker on her 2013 album I Thought About You. Featuring a selection of standards strongly associated with Baker, Elias mixes her native Brazilian bossa nova with swing, straight-ahead jazz, and even a few bluesy flourishes with much aplomb. The album, produced by Elias' husband, bassist Marc Johnson, also features guitarists Steve Cardenas and Oscar Castro-Neves, drummers Victor Lewis and Rafael Barata, and percussionist Marivaldo Dos Santos. Also adding more than a few moments of deft and thoughtful improvisation is trumpeter Randy Brecker. As Baker grew up listening to the music of the '30s and '40s, many of his own choices for songs to play were informed by the great songbook of those decades. Baker also had a natural inclination toward a pretty melody and romantic lyric and he never failed to pick great songs to perform. Subsequently, Baker's recordings showcase a superb batch of tunes to choose from. Elias, who has also leaned toward playing melodic, often romantic music, is a perfect conduit for reinterpreting Baker. Here she plays such songs as "There Will Never Be Another You," "Let's Get Lost," "Just Friends," "Embraceable You," and "I Get Along Without You Very Well." Instrumentally, no one in jazz has better implemented the baritone saxophone than Mulligan. Born April 6, 1927, in New York City, Mulligan learned piano and reed instruments while in his teens, also writing arrangements for Johnny Warrington's radio band when he was 17. Though he grew up in Philadelphia, he returned to his birthplace at 19 to become staff arranger for Gene Krupa's group. The ensuing years coupled him with the bands of Claude Thornhill, Kai Winding and Stan Kenton, but his most prominent early career presence was as a player in Miles Davis' nonet in 1949 and 1950. In fact, many feel that his input on the famous Birth Of The Cool sessions was unfairly underemphasized by Davis. Mulligan became increasingly significant as a jazz musician when, after moving to Los Angeles, he created a piano-less quartet, which included trumpeter Chet Baker, in 1952. The lack of harmonic direction required exceptionally tight interplay between Mulligan and Baker—and in later configurations, with Art Farmer and Bob Brookmeyer—creating a new texture in jazz that was overwhelmingly accepted by '50s jazz fans. Because of his interest in arranging for larger ensembles, the post-'50s Mulligan led groups featuring 13, 14 and even 20 players. Basing himself in mostly in New York, Mulligan's tours of Europe and Japan cemented his reputation as both a top-notch arranger and the name most likely associated with bringing respect to the baritone saxophone. He died Jan. 19, 1996, in Darien, Conn., from complications following knee surgery. He was 68 years old. In 1993, Mulligan was elected by the Readers into the Down Beat Hall of Fame. Bio: Chet Baker "He always knows where to find the sweet notes, doesn't he?" Herb Ellis remarked one evening to Tal Farlow, listening to Chet Baker in a Canadian nightclub, in 1982. Baker was in severe decline by then, after a surprisingly long life of drug addiction and fast living, but, even on the downhill, Baker's diminished sound could envelop an audience in wistful romance. A lyrical, self-taught improviser with a soft touch that seemed to kiss the notes as they flew by, Baker laid claim to Miles Davis' cool, laid-back approach early on and made it his, for life. With his wan, Hollywood good looks and bad-boy reputation, Baker became the posterboy for West Coast cool jazz. In a style that combined restraint with a certain nervous agitation and a strong dose of sentimentality, particularly on ballads, Baker captured the imagination not only of jazz lovers, but of a general public fascinated as much by his lifestyle as his music. Baker's high, whispered vocals, even more popular now than in his heyday, captured the same sleepy intimacy as his trumpet, particularly on such tunes as "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and "Everything Happens To Me." Baker was born Dec. 23, 1929 in Yale, Okla., and moved to California with his family in 1940. He began playing trumpet in junior high school, continuing his studies at El Camino College after a stint with the U.S. Army Band in Berlin. In 1950, while stationed at the Presidio, in San Francisco, Baker became a regular at Bop City. In 1952, back in Los Angeles he won an audition with Charlie Parker, then was recruited by Gerry Mulligan into his ground-breaking pianoless quartet, which held forth at the Haig, in Hollywood. Recordings by the quartet made Baker famous. He went solo, working again with Parker, then forming a succession of groups as a leader, first in the United States and, from 1955, in Europe. Baker's prolonged heroin addiction, and his many subsequent arrests, ensured that his career, a large part of which he spent in Europe fleeing the authorities, was sadly uneven, though a methadone recovery program in the 1980s led to widespread touring. Just before he died—on May 13, 1988, in Amsterdam, under mysterious circumstances, falling out of a second story window—Baker played himself in a revealing documentary by Bruce Weber, Let's Get Lost. The beginning of an autobiography, As Though I Had Wings, appeared posthumously in 1997. In 1989, Baker was elected by the Critics into the Down Beat Hall of Fame. review CD CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT is a compilation of material from the original CTI releases: "Carnegie Hall Concerts, Volume 1 and 2".Personnel includes: Chet Baker (trumpet); Gerry Mulligan (saxophone); Dave Samuels (vibraphone); Bob James (keyboards); John Scofield (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Harvey Mason (drums).Personnel includes: Chet Baker (trumpet); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Bob James (keyboards); John Scofield (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Harvey Mason (drums).Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, November 24, 1974.Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. This 1974 release finds Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker together in a live setting. The two jazz paragons hadn't worked together in 10 years, but from the first downbeat it's evident that they still possess the musical rapport they'd developed as young men. Taking the West Coast by storm 22 years earlier with their famed pianoless quartet, Mulligan and Baker had the keen ability to work almost as one performer. This is clearly evident on "Bernie's Tune," where they trade licks on the tune's bridge in articulate, fluid gestures, almost as one player.Despite their substance abuse, Baker and Mulligan grew as improvisers over many years performing on concert stages and in jazz clubs. This album is testament to their ability to adapt and embrace modern jazz stylings. When they hark back to their roots on compositions such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Line For Lyons," they play with a kind of casual, relaxed swing indicative of the '50s cool jazz feel they helped create.

(wikipedia) - - - Lars Gullin - Lars Gullin Vol. 1, 1955/56 with Chet Baker (Stockholm Dragon 1992) 1. Danny's dream. 2. Chesney Henry Chet Baker, Jr. (December 23, 1929 - May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and singer. Though his music earned him a large following (particularly albums featuring his vocals, such as Chet Baker Sings), Baker's popularity was due in part to his matinee idol-beauty and well-publicized drug habit. He died in 1988 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. - - - Baker was born and raised in a musical household in Yale, Oklahoma; his father was a professional guitar player. Baker began his musical career singing in a church choir. His father introduced him to brass instruments with a trombone, which was replaced with a trumpet when the trombone proved too large. Baker received some musical education at Glendale Junior High School, but left school at age 16 in 1946 to join the United States Army. He was posted to Berlin where he joined the 298th Army band. Leaving the army in 1948, he studied theory and harmony at El Camino College in Los Angeles. He dropped out in his second year, however, re-enlisting in the army in 1950. Baker became a member of the Sixth Army Band at the Presidio in San Francisco, but was soon spending time in San Francisco jazz clubs such as Bop City and the Black Hawk. Baker once again obtained a discharge from the army to pursue a career as a professional musician. - - - Baker's earliest notable professional gigs were with saxophonist Vido Musso's band, and also with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, though he earned much more renown in 1951 when he was chosen by Charlie Parker to play with him for a series of West Coast engagements. In 1952, Baker joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, which was an instant phenomenon. Several things made the Mulligan/Baker group special, the most prominent being the interplay between Mulligan's baritone sax and Baker's trumpet. Rather than playing identical melody lines in unison like bebop giants Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, the two would complement each other's playing with contrapuntal touches, and it often seemed as if they had telepathy in anticipating what the other was going to play next. The Quartet's version of My Funny Valentine, featuring a memorable Baker solo, was a major hit, and became a song with which Baker was intimately associated. The Quartet found success quickly, but lasted less than a year because of Mulligan's arrest and imprisonment on drug charges. In 1953, Pacific Jazz released Chet Baker Sings, a record that increased his profile but alienated traditional jazz fans; he would continue to sing throughout his career. Baker formed quartets with Russ Freeman in 1953-54 with bassists Carson Smith, Joe Mondragon, and Jimmy Bond and drummers Shelly Manne, Larry Bunker, and Bob Neel. The quartet was successful in their three live sets in 1954. In that year, Baker won the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Because of his chiseled features, Hollywood studios approached Baker and he made his acting debut in the film Hell's Horizon, released in the fall of 1955. He declined an offer of a studio contract, preferring life on the road as a musician. Over the next few years, Baker fronted his own combos, including a 1955 quintet featuring Francy Boland, where Baker combined playing trumpet and singing. He became an icon of the West Coast cool school of jazz, helped by his good looks and singing talent. Baker's 1956 recording, released for the first time in its entirety in 1989 as The Route, with Art Pepper helped further the West Coast jazz sound and became a staple of cool jazz. - - - Baker was a heroin user from the 1950s for the remainder of his life, and eventually saw his musical career decline as a result. At times, Baker pawned his instruments for money to maintain his drug habit. In the early 1960s, he served more than a year in prison in Italy on drug charges; he was later expelled from both West Germany and the UK for drug-related offenses. Baker was eventually deported from West Germany to the United States after running afoul of the law there a second time. He settled in Milpitas in northern California where he played in San Jose and San Francisco between short jail terms served for prescription fraud. In 1966, Baker was savagely beaten (allegedly while attempting to buy drugs) after a gig in San Francisco, sustaining severe cuts on the lips and broken front teeth, which ruined his embouchure. He stated in the film Let's Get Lost that an acquaintance attempted to rob him one night but backed off, only to return the next night with a group of several men who chased him. He landed finally in a car where he was surrounded. Instead of rescuing him, the people inside the car pushed him back out onto the street where the chase by his attackers continued, and subsequently, he was beaten to the point that his teeth, never in good condition to begin with, were knocked out, leaving him without the ability to play his horn. He took odd jobs, among them pumping gas. Meanwhile he was fitted for dentures and worked on his embouchure. Three months later he got a gig in New York. Between 1966 and 1974, Baker mostly played flugelhorn and recorded music that could mostly be classified as West Coast Jazz - - - After developing a new embouchure resulting from dentures, Baker returned to the straight-ahead jazz that began his career, relocating to New York City and began performing and recording again, notably with guitarist Jim Hall. Later in the seventies, Baker returned to Europe where he was assisted by his friend Diane Vavra, who took care of his personal needs and otherwise helped him during his recording and performance dates. From 1978 until his death, Baker resided and played almost exclusively in Europe, returning to the USA roughly once per year for a few performance dates. Baker's most prolific era as a recording artist was 1978-88. However, as his extensive output is strewn across numerous, mostly small European labels, none of these recordings ever reached a wider audience, even though many of them were well-received by critics, who maintain that the period was one of Baker's most mature and rewarding. Of particular importance are Baker's quartet featuring the pianist Phil Markowitz (1978-80) and his trio with guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse (1983-85). He also toured with saxophonist Stan Getz during this period. In 1983, British singer Elvis Costello, a longtime fan of Baker, hired the trumpeter to play a solo on his song Shipbuilding, from the album Punch the Clock. The song was a top 40 hit in the UK, and exposed Baker's music to a new audience. Later, Baker often featured Costello's song Almost Blue (inspired by Baker's version of The Thrill Is Gone) in his live sets, and recorded the song on Let's Get Lost, a documentary film about his life. The video material recorded by Japanese television during Baker's 1987 tour in Japan showed a man whose face looked much older than he was; but his trumpet playing was alert, lively and inspired. Fans and critics alike agree that the live album Chet Baker in Tokyo, recorded less than a year before his death and released posthumously, ranks among Baker's very best. Silent Nights, another critically acclaimed release, and Baker's only recording of Christmas music, was recorded with Christopher Mason in New Orleans in 1986 and released in 1987. Chet Baker's compositions included Chetty's Lullaby, Freeway, Early Morning Mood, Two a Day, So Che Ti Perdero (I Know I Will Lose You), Il Mio Domani (My Tomorrow), Motivo Su Raggio Di Luna (Tune on a Moon Beam), The Route, Skidadidlin', New Morning Blues, Blue Gilles, Dessert, and Anticipated Blues. - - - At about 3:00 am on May 13, 1988, Baker was found dead on Prins Hendrikkade, near Zeedijk, on the street below his second-story room (Room 210) of Hotel Prins Hendrik in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with serious wounds to his head. Heroin and cocaine were found in his hotel room, and an autopsy also found these drugs in his body. There was no evidence of a struggle, and the death was ruled an accident. Baker's body was brought home for interment in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California. A plaque outside the Hotel Prins Hendrik now memorializes him. - - - Jeroen de Valk has written a biography of Baker which is available in several languages: Chet Baker: His Life and Music is the English translation, Chet Baker: Herinneringen aan een lyrisch trompettist (remembrances of a lyrical trumpet player) is the Dutch edition (updated and expanded in 2007), and it is also published in Japan and Germany. James Gavin has also written a biography: Deep In A Dream - The Long Night of Chet Baker. Baker's lost memoirs are available in the book As Though I Had Wings, which includes an introduction by Carol Baker. A new biography, Funny Valentine, will be published in the summer of 2012. Written by Hong Kong-based author, Matthew Ruddick, it will be published by Melrose Books. Baker was immortalized by the photographer William Claxton in his book Young Chet: The Young Chet Baker. An Academy Award-nominated 1988 documentary about Baker, Let's Get Lost, portrays him as a cultural icon of the 1950s, but juxtaposes this with his later image as a drug addict. The film, directed by fashion photographer Bruce Weber, was shot in black-and-white and includes a series of interviews with friends, family (including his three children by third wife Carol Baker), associates and women friends, interspersed with film from Baker's earlier life, and with interviews with Baker from his last years. Time after Time: The Chet Baker Project, written by playwright James O'Reilly, toured Canada in 2001 to much acclaim. The musical play Chet Baker - Speedball, explores aspects of his life and music, and was premiered in London at the Oval House Theatre in February 2007, with further development of the script and performances leading to its revival at the 606 Club in the London Jazz Festival of November 2007. Baker was reportedly the inspiration for the character Chad Bixby, played by Robert Wagner in the 1960 film All the Fine Young Cannibals. Another film, to be titled Prince of Cool, about Baker's life, was cancelled as of January 2008. (wikipedia) - - - Chet Baker - The Best of Chet Baker Sings 1953-1956 (Capitol Records 1989) 1. Chet Baker - Live At Ronnie Scott's 1968

When Chet Bakers mouth was smashed up by a gang of hoodlums in San Francisco in 1968, no-one believed that the boy wonder of the West Coast Cool school of Jazz would ever play the trumpet again. After two years of pain, Chet re-emerged on the jazz scene playing better than ever. This set recorded at Ronnie Scotts on June 6, 1968 showcases Chets playing at its most passionate and reminds us that he is also one of jazzs most idiosyncratically delightful singers. He is accompanied by his European rhythm section of Michel Grailler on piano and Riccardo del Fra on bass. In addition, a long standing admirer of Chets, Van Morrison, guests on one track here, a soulful interpretation of Send in the Clowns. Chet Baker - Grey December Original: December, 1953 Remastered: 1992 Audio CD: January 14, 1992 Label: Pacific Jazz Quality: flac + cue Two stray Chet Baker 10" titles and a few associated alternate takes are gathered on this single disc. Grey December is one of the better CD reissues featuring Baker's early-'50s recordings on Pacific Jazz, the purveyors of West Coast cool. The instrumental sides feature two septet sessions in December of 1953 and the vocal sextet session dates to February of 1955 -- all three of which feature Baker and pianist Russ Freeman. Rather than present these sides chronologically, the four vocal tracks precede the decidedly lengthier 1953 instrumental sessions -- a programming decision that works remarkably well. Enthusiasts of Baker's laid-back vocals should consider the February 1955 sessions as essential. The combination of Bud Shank's ethereal flute work when married to Baker's muted vocals create an intense burst of melancholy. The uneven tempo and minor chord progressions featured on the title track as well as "I Wish I Knew" are irresistible in their appeal to fans of the genre. Baker's soft-toned trumpet solos match his vocals in spirit and passion. Even the hapless optimism of "Someone to Watch Over Me" is tinged in noir pathos. A much more traditional setting for Baker can be heard on the septet sides. Although the instinctual interaction between Baker and Freeman shines throughout, "Headline," "Moonlight Becomes You," and the up-tempo swinger "A Dandy Line" best exemplify everything positive about that musical relationship. The pair intertwine their melodies so closely and carefully it can be difficult to separate them. On the CD pressing, alternate takes of "Bockhanal," "A Dandy Line," "Little Old Lady," "Moonlight Becomes You," and "Goodbye" are also included. ~ AllMusic Chet Baker was always a lyrical trumpet player, especially on ballads, his cool tone, always was romantic, and moody. However his singing is what makes him so unique. These 1st sessions of Baker's as a leader are superb, his vocalizing on teh 1st several tracks is exellent. He sings Someone To Watch Over Me & This Is Always with pure romanticism. He is the original funny valentine so expressed in the Rodgers & Hart song. A greta cd, and an essential perfromer of jazz. ~ lala 1 Chet Baker - Grey December Tracklist 01 Grey December 02 I Wish I Knew 03 Someone To Watch Over Me 04 This Is Always 05 Headline 06 Ergo 07 Bockhanal 08 Bockhanal (Alternate Take) 09 A Dandy Line 10 A Dandy Line ( Alternate Take) 11 Pro Defunctus 12 Little Old Lady 13 Little Old Lady (Alternate Take) 14 Moonlight Becomes You 15 Moonlight Becomes You (Alternate Take) 16 Goodbye 17 Goodbye (Alternate Take)
