Lars Gullin - Lars Gullin 1 - 1955-56 with Chet Baker
(wikipedia)

Stan Getz & Chet Baker - Stan meets Chet 1958 - 320Kbps - Jazz # DrBn
STAN GETZ & CHET BAKER, Stan meets Chet, 1958
STAN MEETS CHET is a 1958 cool jazz summit meeting between saxophonist Stan Getz and trumpeter Chet Baker.
The music is straightahead West Coast bop.
The pairing of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1958 in Chicago for an LP seemed like such a natural thing - both being golden boys enjoying their heydays with lyrically clean, brilliant solo styles.
The original LP was of an all-tube session in February of 1958 that was the first time Getz and Baker recorded together. It was before the trumpeter’s association with Gerry Mulligan which brought him to the public’s attention.
Their playing on "I'll Remember April" is a study in contrasts: Getz's long lines against Baker's shorter phrases. Baker delivers his best solo here, keeping to a medium tempo, while Getz gives his all on his curiously named adaptation of "Cherokee", which he cranks up to a furious tempo.
The proceedings are fueled throughout by a solid Chicago rhythm section.

Chet Baker's West Coast cool comes to the Big Apple on Chet Baker in New York. The project would be Baker's first -- in a four album deal -- with the Big Apple-based Riverside Records. The bicoastal artist incorporates his decidedly undernourished sound and laid-back phrasing into the styling of Al Haig (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The results are uniformly brilliant as Baker's cool-toned solos fly and bop with authority around the equally impressive supporting soloists. Conversely, the same cohesive unity continues on the introspective numbers that are more akin to Baker's California cool. Undoubtedly one of the charms of this collection is the distinct choice of material. Running the gamut from the relaxed and soothing "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and equally serene "Blue Thoughts" at one end of the spectrum to the percolating and driving intensity of "Hotel 49" on the other. This track features each quintet member taking extended solos corralling together at the head and again at the coda for some intense bop interaction. Especially ferocious is Philly Joe Jones, who could easily be mistaken for Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, or even Gene Krupa with his cacophonous solo that never strays from the beat or loses its sense of swing. Perhaps the best meshing of styles can be heard on the Miles Davis composition "Solar." This "best-of" candidate refers to both Chambers' and Jones' concurrent involvement with Davis. The churning backbeat likewise propels the melody and ultimately the performers into reaching beyond their individual expertise and into an area of mutual brilliance. Chet Baker in New York is a highly recommended entry into Baker's catalog. It should also be noted that these same sides were issued in 1967 as Polka Dots and Moonbeams on the Jazzland label.

Chet Baker was a primary exponent of the West Coast school of cool jazz in the early and mid-'50s. As a trumpeter, he had a generally restrained, intimate playing style and he attracted attention beyond jazz for his photogenic looks and singing. But his career was marred by drug addiction.

Chet Baker - Chet in Paris vol. 1 [EAC FLAC]

Chet Baker's first trip to Paris had its share of twists. His regular pianist, Russ Freeman, was unavailable, so the promising young player Dick Twardzik was recruited. Unfortunately, a few weeks after the quartet arrived, Twardzik was found dead in his hotel room from a heroin overdose. Baker still had bookings to honor, so he recruited French pianist René Urtreger and drummer Bert Dahlander to replace Peter Littman (who had returned to the U.S.). The first of four volumes includes all of the selections recorded for Barclay that feature the Baker quartet with Twardzik; all but one were composed by Bob Zieff, enjoyable pieces but hardly expected to become a part of the jazz canon. Twardzik plays a little bit of celeste at the beginning of his composition "The Girl from Greenland," which has some more adventurous chord progressions than Zieff's material. The later group with Urtreger adds two horns, alto saxophonist Jean Aldegon, and trombonist Benny Vasseur, which doesn't sound like a pickup group at all. The extra horns take some pressure off the leader, while the final piece, "In Memory of Dick" was contributed by Belgian saxophonist Bobby Jaspar (who would also die prematurely at a young age). If the Baker-Twardzik group had been able to work together for an extended period, it might have produced compelling music. This collection is enjoyable though it falls short of being essential. Long out of print and fetching ridiculous prices at auction, this music reappeared in a comprehensive boxed set of Baker's Barclay recordings that was issued in 2008.

The second in a four-CD series that documents his first trip to Europe has the studio sides from two separate sessions in which the trumpeter was teamed with French rhythm sections. The music (all but one are standards) finds Baker in top early form, making this cool-toned bop music well worth hearing.

Chet Baker - Chet in Paris vol. 3 [EAC FLAC]

The third of four CDs in this valuable series continues the documentation of Baker's first trip to Europe with three interesting sessions. Baker is teamed with tenor-saxophonist Bobby Jaspar and pianist Rene Urtreger for four selections, interacts with the tenor of Jean-Louis Chautemps and pianist Francy Boland on the next four songs and is finally heard with a fine French octet. Throughout this entire series, the trumpeter is in fine form. The third volume of the Barclay/Emarcy recordings is probably the least essential, and illustrates the degree to which Chet benefited from a guiding hand in the studio. It comprises three separate recording sessions. The first is excellent, and features Bobby Jaspar on tenor and René Urtreger on piano. Sadly the band only recorded four tunes; this may be down to time pressure, since Chet had just returned from Iceland. The second session was recorded in February with Chet’s working band, which included Jean-Louis Chautemps on tenor. Again, only four tracks were recorded, and the existence of multiple takes suggests some frustration with the heavy-handed drumming of Saudrais. The final session features three songs composed for Chet by Pierre Michelot and Christian Chevalier, and later re-recorded for the Big Band LP.

Artists House, a classy if short-lived label, released this attractive Chet Baker LP, a quintet date with tenor-saxophonist Gregory Herbert, pianist Harold Danko, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Mel Lewis. The challenging material ("The Song Is You" is the only one of the five songs that is a standard) inspires the musicians to play creative solos. It is particularly interesting to hear Baker interpret the Wayne Shorter tune "ESP." This set has been reissued on CD in the OJC series.

Chet Baker - The Best Of Chet Baker Plays [EAC FLAC]

This 1953-1956 compilation represents Chet Baker's early days recording in Los Angeles. The appellation "cool" has been ascribed to Baker because of his often understated, contemplative approach to jazz, but on THE BEST OF CHET BAKER PLAYS we hear a trumpeter who defies any such categorization.
Just as Miles Davis' BIRTH OF THE COOL is canted more towards bebop than the atmospheric, textural and reflective attributes so often associated with cool jazz, ...CHET BAKER PLAYS is more about tightly arranged, uptempo burning than midtempo cool. Of course, Baker's introspective ballad playing is also featured on tracks such as "Moonlight Becomes You" and "Darn that Dream." Overall, however, what makes Baker's conception so unique in his early years, is the light, yet crisp, feel he and his band mates employ. Whether playing bebop or cool, his approach is consistent and, most of all, innovative. In short, THE BEST OF CHET BAKER PLAYS shows Baker's adaptability as well as his versatility.

Chet Baker - Somewhere Over The Rainbow [EAC FLAC]

Taken from Chet Is Back!, recorded in Italy in 1962, Somewhere Over the Rainbow features Baker at his finest, and is an excellent introduction to the musician's non-vocal work. As is the case with most Baker albums, Somewhere Over the Rainbow feels like a quickly put-together session recording. The material is all standard jazz repertoire, played in a no-frills format, without specific arrangements or endings. It is the musicianship here that is the main attraction. Baker has rarely sounded better; his technique is in top shape, and his solos are textbook examples of lyrical bop playing. Baker, as was not always the case throughout his career, surrounds himself on Somewhere Over the Rainbow with strong and supportive sidemen. Guitarist Rene Thomas, underrecorded throughout his career, becomes one of the highlights of the session, and makes the album a must-have for bop guitar enthusiasts. Tune selection is surprisingly upbeat for a Baker recording.

Chet Baker - The Italian Sessions [EAC FLAC]

Throughout the 1950s Chet Baker gained fame as a quiet, low-register trumpeter with a cool tone and a relaxed style. This CD should therefore be a major surprise to listeners who believe he was incapable of playing heated material, or of utilizing the upper register of his horn. Assisted by a fine European sextet (including Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute and guitarist Rene Thomas), Baker is heard in peak form throughout this memorable and frequently exciting bop date. [Originally issued as Chet Is Back!.]

Chet Baker - Plays The Best of Lerner & Loewe [EAC FLAC]

This is one of the last Chet Baker (trumpet) long players recorded in the States prior to the artist relocating to Europe in the early '60s. Likewise, the eight-tune collection was the final effort issued during his brief association with the Riverside Records imprint. The project was undoubtedly spurred on by the overwhelming success of the Shelly Manne-led combo that interpreted titles taken from the score to My Fair Lady (1956). In addition to becoming an instant classic, Manne's LP was also among of the best-selling jazz platters of all time. While Baker and crew may have gained their inspiration from Manne, these readings are comparatively understated. That said, the timelessness of the melodies, coupled with the assembled backing aggregate, make Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe (1959) a memorable concept album. Although Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe had produced a number of well-received and luminous entries, half of the material on this disc is derived from My Fair Lady (1956). "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is given a languid torch song treatment that spirals around Baker's cool inconspicuous leads, featuring some equally sublime contributions from Zoot Simms (alto sax/tenor sax). This contrasts the resilient and free-spirited waltz on "I Could Have Danced All Night," which benefits from Herbie Mann's (flute) breezy counterpoint and solo. Bill Evans (piano) also lays down some tasty licks over top of the solid rhythm of Earl May (bass) and Clifford Jarvis (drums). "On the Street Where You Live" is a highlight, as the personnel take the time to stretch out and thoroughly examine with some key counterpoint between Baker's honey-toned horn and Pepper Adams' (baritone sax) husky and ample involvement. Of the non-My Fair Lady sides, "The Heather on the Hill" and a superior "Almost Like Being in Love" hail from Brigadoon (1947), while the scintillating and smoldering "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" comes from Gigi (1958). Not to be missed is "I Talk to the Trees," with an unhurried and evenly measured tempo that is coupled to Baker's austere, yet rich and purposeful lines. In 2004, Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe was remastered utilizing 20-bit analog-to-digital signal conversion for optimum audio.
